Admission

Free admission to the Main Building (Permanent Collection and all exhibitions) and the gardens.

Parking

Secure parking available to visitors. 

Parking for buses is also available at the Museum.

Parking fee: R10 per vehicle. Cash only.

All parking fees must be paid before 16:30 on weekdays and 15:30 on weekends and Public Holidays or you will not be able to leave the premises. Parking for picnickers is provided in the parking area next to the grass. Parking on the grass is strictly forbidden. The parking area in front of the Main Building is reserved for visitors to the Museum.

No cars will be allowed in through the main gate after 16:30 on weekdays and 15:30 on weekends and Public Holidays.

Disabled Visitors

A ramp provides access for wheel chairs at the main entrance, while a lift provides access to the Permanent Collection display areas on the first floor.

Picnic/Garden Rules and Regulations

The management and staff of Oliewenhuis Art Museum would like to make your visit as pleasant as possible. We therefore need to inform all visitors of matters to take into consideration when spending time at Oliewenhuis Art Museum and its gardens.

Right of admission is reserved.

Please respect the authority of Oliewenhuis staff members and Security Officers whose duty is to ensure that no one causes any kind of disturbance or engages in any dangerous activities on the premises. Such behaviour creates an unpleasant environment for other visitors.

Groups of more than 30 will not be allowed use of the front lawn for picnics, photo sessions or any gatherings.  The use of the front lawn is intended for small, informal picnics. For picnics, functions in the back garden, and all venue hiring for private functions and related questions, please contact Cliffie Barnes at T +27 (0) 51 447 9609 or cliffie.barnes@nationalmuseum.co.za.

School groups visiting the museum during the week will only be allowed on the front lawn if they participate in a guided tour and/or an African Carousel ride. School groups visiting the museum on weekends and public holidays will only be accommodated if a booking for a guided tour and/or an African Carousel ride has been made in advance. African Carousel rides for children are available at R5 per ride. Tickets can be purchased at the Caretakers in the front office located in the Main Building.

Alcohol may not be consumed by anyone under the age of 18. Excessive use of alcohol by persons over the age of 18 will not be tolerated. Persons abusing alcohol will be asked to leave the premises.

Ball games are not allowed in the back gardens as they may cause damage to the sculptures.

In accordance with Fire Safety Regulations, NO “braais”, fires or gas apparatus are allowed.

Music, singing or playing instruments may cause a disturbance to other visitors and are not allowed.

Erecting of tents, jumping castles, gazebos or similar structures are not allowed.

The front lawns are strictly for small picnics and the setting up of tables and chairs are not allowed.

Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash and under control. Please clean up after your dog.

No plants may be removed or damaged.

The gates close at 17:00. No member of the public is permitted to be on the premises between 17:00 and 08:00 unless attending an official function. Anyone found on the property after 17:00 will be asked to leave the premises.

On Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays:

The gates close at 16:00. No member of the public is permitted to be on the premises between 16:00 and 09:00 unless attending an official function. Anyone found on the property after 16:00 will be asked to leave the premises.

Groups of between 20 and 30 people (groups of more than 30 will not be allowed) must apply in writing to the Curator of the Oliewenhuis Art Museum if they wish to have a picnic on the front lawns (picnics and functions in the back garden must be arranged with The Terrace Restaurant). If permission is granted a maintenance fee of R15.00 per person is charged and is payable at the Museum. Proof of payment must be presented to the Security Officer on duty.
