Oliewenhuis Art Museum, a satellite of the National Museum, Bloemfontein, cordially invites the public to a short lecture and photo story book launch of Simbamangu, through the eyes of caracal, a collaboration by Dr Nico Avenant and Homo ambiens Wildlife Conservation Photography, in the Main Building of Oliewenhuis Art Museum at 19:00 on Thursday, 16 November 2023.

Dr. Nico Avenant from the Mammalogy Department, National Museum, Bloemfontein has teamed up with Homo ambiens Wildlife Conservation Photography (www.homoambiens.com/) to publish a book on one of Southern Africa’s most striking and secretive cat species, the caracal.  The work informs on the intricate interlinkages and complexities in nature, and the multifaceted and controversial ways in which caracal are managed in Southern Africa. It also indicates the important role that wildlife photography can play in dealing with very sensitive conservation issues.

Apart from very special pictures of this predator, and the habitat in which it lives, the text reflects on more than 20 years of Nico’s research in a diversity of habitats and geographic areas. The photos were taken by Roberto Isotti and Alberto Cambone and the text written by Nico Avenant and Micòl Ricci.

Copies of the book will be available to purchase at a discounted price on the night of the event and refreshments will be served.

To attend the event, please RSVP on or before Wednesday, 15 November 2023 by sending an e-mail to Ester le Roux at oliewen@nationalmuseum.co.za.
