Oliewenhuis Art Museum is hosting an informal discussion on Celebrating 30 Years of Democracy Towards Women’s Development on Friday, 9 August 2024 at 11:00, Main Building, First Floor in commemoration of Women’s Day.

Every year, in August, South Africa celebrates Women’s Month, to pay tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956, in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women. This year’s theme: Celebrating 30 Years of Democracy Towards Women’s Development, marks the 68th anniversary of the historic march. During Women’s month we celebrate women as active agents of change and social transformation. The commemoration also allows us to take stock of achievements and the challenges that remain while mobilizing support for the further development of women.

On Friday, 9 August at 11:00, Oliewenhuis Art Museum will host an informal discussion as part of the exhibition 30 Years of Democracy: Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Freedom. This event will focus on honouring women artists and examining how their work continues to resonate with women today. It offers an opportunity to reflect on their significant contributions, showcasing how their creativity can inspire and empower women while fostering important conversations about their impact.

The discussion will highlight featured artists from the exhibition, such as Amita Makan, a South African textile artist who draws inspiration from the rich tapestry of history, politics, and culture in her work. Nomusa Makhubu’s artworks will be discussed to highlight her exploration of identity shaped by colonial influences, employing techniques like photographic self-portraiture and collage. This event promises to celebrate the vital role of women artists in our society.
