The National Museum will be hosting a number of exciting events and activities to celebrate heritage month in the build up to Heritage Day which takes place on 24 September. South Africa is a culturally rich nation and it is important to recognise and celebrate the cultural wealth of our nation.
The History Department and Oliewenhuis Art Museum will host a Living Heritage Event at Oliewenhuis during September. The theme of this year’s event is ‘The Art of Storytelling’ and the objective is to combine storytelling with art. Approximately 40 learners from Tswellang Special School will participate in the open- air event. Groups of learners will be asked to devise and tell a short story and also create an art work that illustrates the story. Entrance to Oliewenhuis is free.
Basotho heritage will be celebrated with an exhibition at the First Raadsaal and Wagon Museum. The exhibition will be on view for the whole of September. Entrance to First Raadsaal Museum is free. The Education Department will be presenting outreach lessons on “My Country, South Africa” to Pre-primary schools. The lesson encourages learners to be proud South African citizens and will highlight the importance of our National symbols, our many different cultures and teaches learners to greet one another in our 11 official languages, amongst other interesting activities.
