Oliewenhuis Art Museum presents a guided tour exploring the origins of the Art Museum and its founder collections.
An important aspect of the formation of Oliewenhuis Art Museum’s Permanent Collection is the fact that the collection was built without any private or government funding.
The founding collection was comprised of donations by the Bloemfontein Group and A.C White, together with artworks bought with funds generated by the Social Committee of the Friends of Oliewenhuis, under the guidance of Dora Scott. This is an indication that the collection was built from the initiative of devoted art enthusiasts and therefore, that the origins of Oliewenhuis Art Museum’s Permanent Collection are unique and reflects a cultural identity specific to the Free State.
The Oliewenhuis Art Museum’s founding collection comprises the Bloemfontein Group’s donation in 1988 as the 24 donated artworks were kept safe in the Scott trust until a formal art museum opened in Bloemfontein. Subsequent to the Bloemfontein Group donation, the A.C White donation in 1990 also significantly contributed in establishing the Permanent Collection.
With this in mind Oliewenhuis Art Museum will host a special guided tour at 11:00 on 18 May 2019 to celebrate International Museum day. This guided tour aims to give insight towards these donations and the important role they play in the Art Museum.
