On Saturday, 4 May 2024 from 7:00 – 11:00, there will be a bird-ringing demonstration by Dawie de Swardt, the head of the Ornithology Department of the National Museum that will take place at Oliewenhuis Art Museum.
This forms part of the annual Bird Week celebrations of Birdlife South Africa and Birdlife Free State.
The ‘Bird of the Year’ for 2024 is the Bateleur (Terathopius ecaudatus). Also known as the Berghaan (Afrikaans), ingqungqulu (isiZulu), and ingqanga (isiXhosa), this magnificent raptor is famous for its striking appearance and remarkable aerial behaviour.
Visitors can enjoy complimentary admission, while secure parking is offered at a fee of R10 per car, payable in cash.
