Study of Birds
The Ornithology Department was established in the early 1970s, with the appointment of Dr Tibor Farkas (1973-1986). The organization of material on display, much of which was exotic in origin, was the primary objective at this time.
Active collection of material began in the mid 1970s, but a lack of resources prevented the addition of new material to the collection between 1979 and 1982.
During Dr Roy Earlé’s term as Head of Department (1983-1990), the main objective was to resurrect active collection, focussing on birds representative of the Free State. The organization of the collection however meant its rationalization to about 500 study skins, as a result of deterioration of many specimens. There are currently more than 5000 skins in the collection.
A skeleton collection, started in 1983, grew rapidly and currently contains more than 2760 specimens. This collection is also widely used by palaeontologists and also for owl diet studies and other identifications. The aim of the Department is to built a representative skin collection and active collecting is still carried out in various parts of the Free State which is a ongoing project. The preparator in the department, Lots Morapedi, retired (February 1983 – May 2024) after more than 41 years at the National Museum. He was responsible for preparation of skeletal (more than 2000 specimens) and skin specimens (more than 5000 specimens) in the collection.
Collection of avian ecto-parasites and avian blood parasites began in 1987. The alcohol collection was started in September 1988. A tissue sample collection was started in 2011. Samples were also donated by visiting researchers from the University of New Mexico, the Natural History Museum of Paris, and the University of California based on Ornithology Department assistance with their field trips in the Free State.
Management of the Departmental collection was the responsibility of Ben Bester (1984-1985), Hester du Toit (1984-1992), Kotie Herholdt (1985-1988), Mariana de Wet (1986-1989), and Dawie de Swardt (1988 to present).
Rick Nuttall was Head of Department from 1991-2003, whereafter Dawie de Swardt was appointed to this position.
Research – past and present
Research in the Department has focused on the taxonomy of the Turdidae, on bird communities of various vegetation types, and on the distribution of species in the Free State Province (Tibor Farkas). Roy Earlé studied the biology of a number of species and groups of birds, including swallows (Hirundinidae), White-browed Sparrow-weaver Plocepasser mahali, Ant-eating Chat Myrmecocichla formicivora, Ground Woodpecker Geocolaptes olivaceus, House Passer domesticus and Cape Sparrow P. melanurus, as well as aerial-feeding bird communities in the forested north-eastern parts of South Africa. In collaboration with other researchers, Roy began to identify and describe avian blood parasites of South African birds. Together with Professor Nick Grobler (University of the Free State), he also produced the first Atlas of Bird Distribution in the Orange Free State, published in 1987.
Although employed as Collections Manager, Kotie Herholdt also carried out research, focusing mainly on the distribution patterns of Ludwig’s Neotis ludwigii and Denham’s Bustard N. denhami, breeding biology of the Ant-eating Chat Myrmecocichla formicivora, and of Little Swifts Apus affinis in urban areas. Dawie de Swardt, as research assistant before appointed as HOD, also assists with Roy Earle’s and Rick Nuttall’s projects in the Free State. Rick Nuttall’s research involves Zosterops (white-eye) systematics, behavioural ecology of estrildid finches (Estrildidae), systematics of various Cisticola species and moult and migration of Barn Swallows Hirundo rustica; the latter also involves collaboration with other swallow researchers, both locally and internationally.
Dawie de Swardt, who is the current HOD of Ornithology Department, studied the behaviour of the Northern Black Korhaan Eupodotis afraoides, the biology, movements and biometrics of Gurney’s Sugarbird Promerops gurneyi and Malachite Sunbirds Nectarinia famosa. Dawie also completed his Msc degree on Gurneys Sugarbird in 2008 and was invited by the Editors of the Handbook Birds of the World series to write the Promeropidae family text for volume 16 of the series. Other projects includes the behaviour (and song dialects between different populations) of the poorly-known African Rock Pipit Anthus crenatus and the taxonomical relationships of Karoo Prinia maculosa and Drakensberg Prinias P. hypoxantha in the Free State and adjacent areas. In collaboration with Dr Raurie Bowie (University of California, Berkeley, USA) blood samples for DNA analysis are collected from both ringed birds and collected specimens.
Current project of the Department includes general bird ringing studies and to build a representative collection of study skin material of Free State birds. Bird ringing studies are also carried out at the Florisbad Research station on the Rufouseared Warblers Malcorus pectoralis and other bird species. A continuation of the previous Gurney’s Sugarbird project is currently in the Soutpansberg and Haenertsburg areas of Limpopo Province to study this sugarbird species which occur in isolated islands of protea woodland in hilly areas surrounded by plantations and grasslands. Also in collaboration with the University of Pretoria, blood samples of the sugarbirds were also collected for genetic diversity research projects.
Dawie de Swardt, head of Ornithology Department, National Museum, Bloemfontein is the senior author on the Birds of the World – Roberts 8 online species text which was recently published live 23 February 2024.
Dawie de Swardt studied Gurney’s Sugarbirds since the early 1980s. Dawie’s late father cultivated Western Cape Protea species in their Lydenburg suburban garden and one day he observed Gurney’s Sugarbirds visiting the protea flowers. This was the start of a long term study on their seasonal movements as these birds occurs in the surrounded mountains of Lydenburg town. A Safring bird ringing project was initiated in late 1986 and later becoming an official research project after employed at the National Museum in August 1988.
This project spans a period of nearly 4 decades and research not only done in Lydenburg, Mpumalanga, but also the eastern Free State, the KwaZulu-Natal escarp and in the Haenertsburg and Soutpansberg areas of Limpopo Province. Dawie also did his Msc degree at University of Free State in 1998 and publish several book chapters, peer reviewed papers and popular articles on Gurney’s Sugarbirds.

Dawie de Swardt, head of Ornithology Department, National Museum, Bloemfontein is the senior author on the Birds of the World – Roberts 8 online species text which was recently published live on 10 May 2024.
Dawie de Swardt studied African Rock Pipits in the Free State and other areas (such as Lesotho, Eastern, Western and Northern Cape Provinces) since 1993. This study begins as a behavioural study at localities in the Bloemfontein area and later expanded to an investigation on their individual and intra-population variations in their vocalizations at various localities. A poster presentation on their song variations was presented at the 12th Pan-African Ornithological Congress (PAOC12) in Goudini, Western Cape in August 2008. The paper “Individual and inter-population variation in African Rock Pipit Anthus crenatus songs” was later published in the conference proceedings in 2010. Further fieldwork was later done on the isolated populations in areas of Groblershoop and Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, Northern Cape as well as areas of Eastern and Western Cape were further sound data of the species were recorded and analysed. These recordings of more than 400 African Rock Pipit sound files forms now part of the Ornithology Department’s Avian Vocalizations collection dataset and sound files.

Bird ringing expedition in Lydenburg
11 January 2017
In February Dawie de Swardt undertook a bird-ringing trip to Lydenburg as part of his annual visit to the study site of the Gurney Sugarbird project. This year he was joined by a group of bird ringers from BirdLife Northern Gauteng, Pretoria, who were interested in the project. They assisted in capturing and ringing sugarbirds and other species and obtaining recapture data. During this visit 19 sugarbirds were captured and blood and feather samples taken. Bird ringing was also carried out in the nearby Gustav Klingbiel Nature Reserve outside Lydenburg where more than 200 birds were captured. Dawie also presented a talk and a bird-ringing demonstration to members of the Escarpment Bird Club at Paardeplaats, Lydenburg. His presentation, Gurney's Sugarbirds in the Lydenburg area – three decades of dedicated research, gave an overview of this long term project.
